In interviews, Hillerman, a Texas native, spoke of the beauty of Hawaii and his good fortune in getting the opportunity to live there for 8 months of the year. Hillerman won an Emmy and Golden Globe for his portrayal of Sergeant Major in the British Army He won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Higgins, a former Sergeant Major in the British Army. The character proved so indelible that CBS asked Hillerman to guest star on “Simon & Simon” and “Murder She Write” as Higgins.

When you think of Hawaii, the last thing that comes to mind is a movie theater. You think of surfing, shaved ice, hula girls and lots of ono (the hawaiian word for “good”) food. All of these things are great and definitely all things you should experience in Hawaii but what if you just really want to catch a movie? Believe it or not there are quite a few movie theaters to choose from, especially on the island of Oahu.

The best movie theater on Oahu by far, is the Ward Consolidated Theaters. This is the newest, biggest and cleanest theater. It is also the closest movie theater to Waikiki, Ala Moana shopping center and Ward Warehouse. There are two movie theaters tied for the next best movie theater. One is the Consilidated Theaters in Kapolei. This theater has a lot of parking and is closest to the only water park in Hawaii and about a 15 minute drive from Ko’olina resort which is now home to the first Disney resort in Hawaii. The other movie theater tied for second best is the Regal Theaters in Pearl Highlands. This theater is away from all the tourist attractions so may not get quite as crowded. There is a great food court nearby and lots of parking as well.

So, after a long day of surfing the waves on the North shore or watching the canoe pageant at Polynesian Culture Center, why not sit back, relax and catch up on the latest box office hits at one of the great movie theaters in Hawaii.

“Filming ‘Hawaii 5-0′: The TV Show Then And Now”

The original “Hawaii 5-0″ premiered in 1968, not long after Hawaii became the 50th state. In the original series, Detective Steve McGarrett ran a state police force backed by the governor. The police force was fictional, as Hawaii does not have a state police force. In the new “Hawaii 5-0″, which premiered in 2010, the focus is on an elite federal task force appointed to take on crime in Hawaii. The cast has generally been given a more youthful bent, and the main character, Detective McGarrett has been given a Navy SEAL background versus a Navy intelligence officer background.

Other big differences include the female governor, the character Kono also being a woman, and many have said that the new show has a large emphasis on violence not found in the original. This is somewhat to be expected though, considering that the main character has been reinvented to be more of a “tough guy”. The original McGarrett famously only used guns as a last resort.

The new theme song is a re-recording of the original using a lot of the original musicians, after an up-tempo, acoustic cover of the original song was widely panned.

Some of my favorite films growing up were shot in Oahu. Movie buffs into history and war films will enjoy these classics, “From Here to Eternity” and the classic film “Tora, Tora, Tora”.

For the romantic, you have to love what Adam Sandler has done in the islands. Sandler has made a couple of movies in Hawaii. Most recently, Sandler traveled to Maui in 2010 to make a romantic comedy with Jennifer Aniston called “Just Go With it.” The primary location for the film was the posh resort at the Grand Wailea Resort. Sandler had also shot the movie “Fifty First Dates” (2003) with Drew Barrymore in different locations in Oahu.

Finally, Action films have a long history of using Kauai for its tropical looking jungles. Steven Spielberg brought the action movie genre to the islands with “Jurassic Park”, and his “Raider of the Lost Ark”. The movies “Avatar” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. ” are two recent films shot in the islands.

Hawaii has a good thing going and no doubt the word, “Action” will be heard again very soon.
