“Filming ‘Hawaii 5-0′: The TV Show Then And Now”

The original “Hawaii 5-0″ premiered in 1968, not long after Hawaii became the 50th state. In the original series, Detective Steve McGarrett ran a state police force backed by the governor. The police force was fictional, as Hawaii does not have a state police force. In the new “Hawaii 5-0″, which premiered in 2010, the focus is on an elite federal task force appointed to take on crime in Hawaii. The cast has generally been given a more youthful bent, and the main character, Detective McGarrett has been given a Navy SEAL background versus a Navy intelligence officer background.

Other big differences include the female governor, the character Kono also being a woman, and many have said that the new show has a large emphasis on violence not found in the original. This is somewhat to be expected though, considering that the main character has been reinvented to be more of a “tough guy”. The original McGarrett famously only used guns as a last resort.

The new theme song is a re-recording of the original using a lot of the original musicians, after an up-tempo, acoustic cover of the original song was widely panned.
